Britannica

The Encyclopedia Britannica is a general English-language encyclopaedia. The articles in the Britannica are aimed at educated adult readers, and written by a staff of 19 full-time editors and over 4,000 expert contributors. It is widely perceived as the most scholarly of encyclopaedias.

For any organization that aspires to take all human knowledge, organize it, summarize it, and publish it in a form that people find useful, the challenges and opportunities have never been greater than they are today. The volume of information is exploding, the world is shrinking, and digital media are changing the way we read, think, and learn.
To meet these challenges and opportunities, Britannica has done what they have always done throughout their 239-year history: sought the very best minds in the world to help them. In the past, they had names like Albert Einstein, Sigmund Freud, Marie Curie, Bertrand Russell, T.H. Huxley, and George Bernard Shaw, all of whom were Britannica contributors in their day.
Today they are the men and women of Britannica's Editorial Board of Advisors—the Nobel laureates and Pulitzer Prize winners, the leading scholars, writers, artists, public servants, and activists who are at the top of their fields.

Customer Reviews:

“If you are serious about research and want the maximum amount of information in one place this is it. I have been using this resource for years, updating annualy. As a regestered user they give you a special price on the latest version that is often less than half list price. I find the interface easy to use and have no problem researching any subject. It allows you to click on highlighted words withen the article which takes you to more detailed information on that subject. Every time you do this the previous article is saved as an easily accessed tab at the top of the page. Compared to this Encarta is a comic book. If you want to be entertained buy Encarta. If you want deep knowledge there is only Britannica.” -- Samuel B.

“Good (print) encyclopedias are hard to find these days. The Britannica is one of the best. Excellent articles, no wasted words, a fine buy at the price. I sent one to my daughter after she admired mine. I rate it a 10 out of 10” -- Kenneth F.

“The Britannica Concise Encyclopedia is the best one-volume, desk-size reference I've ever perused. It is wonderfully user-friendly and is indeed sufficient for most home and office use. Frankly, most adult users don't really need a 30-plus volume encyclopedia, considering the available public libraries and the home access to internet encyclopedias, etc. I have the most recent copy of its closest (one-volume) competitor, The Columbia Encyclopedia. The latter has quite a few more entries (and is quite ungainly to handle too, by the way), but many of the Britannica's entries are simply more concise, comprehensive and feature illustrations, many in color. The Britannica is a great reference, and an excellent and enjoyable "browser".” -- Danna K.
